Very rare and lightly toned
Lot 890
KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Drachm (Silver, 17 mm, 4.26 g, 1 h), Magnesia ad Maeandrum, struck under Menander or Kleitos, circa 323-319. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. AΛEΞANΔPOY Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; to left, bee. Price -, cf. 1937 (spear head to outer right). Very rare and lightly toned. About extremely fine.

From an American collection, acquired before 2021.

The style of the engraving seems to match closely the Alexandrine drachms from Magnesia, but this coin is not published in either Price or Hersh. Hersh does have the type, but in the name of Philip III, Hersh 34, but what would otherwise be Price P50A.
